Mrs. Rodman's Language Arts Class
Welcome Trailblazers!!
I look forward to teaching your child in Language Arts and Social Studies in my homeroom this year. In Language Arts we will be focusing on Grammar, Reading Skills, Writing Skills and Handwriting. Please Read below for expectations of your child's 5th Grade Language Arts.
Book TACO
Book TACO is replacing Accelerated Reader (AR) this year. Each 9 weeks your child will be working toward an individual Book TACO Activity Point Goal. This program will take a little bit of time to learn for students in the first 9 weeks.
Homework
Students are expected read 30 minute EACH DAY! The book your child reads each night is his/her choice but it should be a "just right" book, (on your child's reading level or slightly above and of interest to your child). I will be doing book checks in class to see that students are reading outside of class. Students will also have outside assignments and projects periodically to support their reading and social studies learning.
***In addition, any work that is not completed in class automatically becomes homework and is due the following class day.***
Handwriting
This year your student will be expected to write in cursive. We will focus on this the first 9 weeks of the year. Students will be expected to write in cursive starting the 2nd 9 weeks of the year in my class.
Tests & Grades
Students will be taking Weekly Comprehension tests that are related to the weekly reading lessons and selections.
Homework = 10% of student's 9 weeks grade (all HW grades are completion grades... 100% if is turned in and complete... 0% if it is late)
Classwork/Quizzes/Projects = 40% of student's 9 week's grade ( Examples: Handwriting practice, Center work, Short Answer Quizzes, Writing Projects, Book Reports etc.)
Tests = 50% of student's 9 week's grade (Grades come from comprehension tests and social studies tests)
You can access your child's grade at ANY TIME by going to the Santa Rosa County Website and clicking on the "FOCUS" Tab. You will need your child's student ID that is located in his/her planner and his/her computer login password. I highly recommend that you check your child's grades once a week with him/her to ensure that your child has turned in all of his/her work.
If you ever have any questions regarding your child's education or grades, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or leave a message for me to call you at (850)936-6060 so that we can discuss your concerns.
